Teaching… How do we improve quality?

I just watched a peer, ostensibly from another university, deliver what was positioned as a “Masterclass in Sustainability in Photography”.

Observations:

(1) Almost the entire 45 minutes were read from a script. At several points, the presenter stumbled over pronunciation, and the tone of her voice changed completely on the couple of occasions when she did speak directly rather than reading.

(2) Zero audience engagement/participation apart from being able to ask a few questions through chat online, which were answered at the end. No activities, no quiz, no discuss among yourselves, not even a post an idea on the chat.

(3) While the content addressed many of the elements of, what has become known as, ‘sustainability’, that term itself is outmoded, as sustainability authorities these days would expect it to have been superseded by ‘regenerative’ efforts.

I did ask whether this session was ‘typical’ of the ‘lectures’ on the course. The reply was that it was, though they also have ‘live lectures’ where they discuss students’ work.

Students pay for this. They often know no different.
