How Many People Teach Photography in the UK?

There is no national register of people who teach photography in the UK, which makes any estimate provisional, but not impossible. Several areas can be measured with reasonable confidence, while others can be ‘bounded’ by using provider counts, course data and public listings. This result is, therefore, best treated as a model of the photographic education workforce rather than as a census. If you have better data, please share it here.

The first challenge is one of definition. Photography is taught in schools, further education and higher education, but also through adult learning, private tuition, workshops, camera clubs and online platforms. The people involved do not always describe themselves as photography teachers. A school teacher may identify as an art teacher, a workshop leader as a professional photographer, and a YouTube maker as a content creator. Some people also work across several sectors at once.

Formal education is the strongest for estimation. At school level, Photography is recorded as part of Art and Design GCSE provision. JCQ publishes subject-level examination data across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, while Ofqual provides detailed entry data for England. The 2026 examination data indicate roughly 43,000 GCSE Photography entries across the main awarding bodies.

Entries do not translate directly into teachers, so an assumption is required. If a typical centre enters about 15–22 pupils for GCSE Photography, the national entry total implies roughly 2,000–2,900 active centres. If most centres use one main teacher, while some larger departments involve two or more staff, a reasonable estimate is around 2,300–3,800 school staff involved in teaching photography. The midpoint is close to 3,000.

In the FE sector, the Association of Colleges lists 251 institutions across the UK in August 2026: 208 in England, 24 in Scotland, 13 in Wales and six in Northern Ireland. Not all offer sustained photography teaching, but photography remains present across vocational, GCSE, A-level and higher technical courses. If around 140–190 college organisations or major campuses provide substantial photography teaching, and each involves an average of two to four relevant staff, this suggests approximately 450–850 FE educators.

Higher education is easier to map at provider level. A UCAS search for Photography in the Arts currently returns 272 courses at 82 providers, while a narrower course search returns 138 current photography courses. The number of teaching staff varies widely between providers. Some courses have small permanent teams supported by visiting lecturers and technical staff, while larger art schools sustain much broader groups. Allowing for this variation suggests about 600–950 people teaching photography in HE, with around 750 as a reasonable central estimate.

Outside formal education, the data become weaker but the scale remains substantial. Adult and community photography teaching takes place through local authority adult learning, independent adult colleges, arts centres, museums, charities and other bodies. Some tutors teach throughout the year; others offer only short courses. A working estimate of 400–1,000 educators seems plausible.

Private tuition may represent one of the largest parts of the field. Superprof currently lists 4,618 photography tutors in the UK. This cannot be read as 4,618 active professional teachers. Listings may be dormant, teaching may be occasional, and some tutors also work in formal education. If only 40–60 per cent are regularly active this platform alone points to around 1,850–2,770 tutors. Photographers who run workshops, mentoring and masterclasses through their own businesses would add to this population. A central estimate of about 2,500 private educators therefore seems reasonable, though with a wide margin of error.

Online photographic education adds another layer. UK photographers teach through YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, paid video courses, podcasts and subscription services. Reliable national data doesn’t exist, but a cautious estimate would place sustained UK-based photography teaching channels at around 100–250 creators. Their number is small compared with the school or private sectors, but their potential learner reach is much greater.

Camera clubs, photographic societies, galleries and charities also support regular teaching, critique, talks and workshops. A provisional estimate of 500–1,500 active club or society educators, plus 200–500 people working through museums, galleries and charities, is plausible. These are the weakest parts of the model and need to be treated cautiously.

Taken together, the sectors suggest roughly 6,000–11,000 photography teaching roles. That total cannot be read as the number of individual people because the overlap between sectors is substantial. After allowing for lecturers who also run workshops, photographers who teach privately and online, and similar combinations, a plausible estimate might be around 6,500–8,500 individuals teaching photography regularly in the UK. A central working figure of about 7,000 is therefore reasonable.

The data suggest that UK photographic education is much less tied to formal institutions than it might first appear. Schools probably contain the largest single group of teachers, but private, community and informal teaching together account for a substantial share of the workforce. The field is also difficult to define through job titles alone. Photography teaching now takes place across a mixed network of formal courses, freelance practice, workshops, clubs and digital media. Any attempt to understand photographic education in the UK therefore needs to look beyond universities and colleges.

Is photography an ‘art’, a ‘science’, or a ‘humanity’?

Art, science, and the humanities are not three neat kinds of subject. They name three broad ways of making sense of the world. Photography can occupy all three spaces.

What is an art?

An art is a form of purposeful making in which choices of form, medium, selection, and arrangement create an experience that exceeds just function. Art may represent the world, question it, alter how it feels, or draw attention to aspects of it that routine perception misses.

This does not mean that art must be beautiful, expressive, or made by a lone creative figure. Much modern and contemporary art would not meet any of those. A better test is that artistic work asks us to pay attention to how something has been made and what that making does to meaning. Dewey (1934) treated art as a mode of experience rather than a class of precious objects; Danto (1964) later argued that what counts as art depends in part on theory, context, and the “artworld” within which an object becomes intelligible.

What is a science?

A science is a disciplined form of enquiry that develops and tests accounts of the natural or social world through systematic evidence, explicit methods, criticism, and revision. Science does not consist of certain facts. It consists of organised attempts to reduce error.

Different sciences work in different ways. Experimental physics, field ecology, clinical psychology, and social epidemiology don’t share one common method. However, what links them is an explicit commitment to gather evidence, create interpretations, scrutinise the subject, and the possibility that claims may need to be corrected. Popper (1959) stressed testability; Kuhn (1962) showed that science also develops through shared models, institutions, disputes, and shifts in what researchers take to be important problems.

What is a humanity?

A humanity is concerned with meaning, value, history, culture, interpretation, and human expression. The humanities don’t just ask what happened or what causes what, but also what does this mean, to whom, within which history, and with what moral or political effect?

Their methods include close reading, historical analysis, comparison, critique, interpretation, archival work, and argument. Evidence still matters, but the aim is not always to discover a general principle. A historian may ask how an idea changed. A philosopher may test the strength of a concept. A literary scholar may examine how a text frames gender, class, grief, or power. The humanities maintain the complexity of something when reducing it simpler ideas too soon could distort the subject (Dilthey, 1989; Nussbaum, 2010).

What is photography?

Photography is hard to place because it isn’t one thing. At its most basic, it is a set of technical processes through which light, optics, photosensitive materials, or digital sensors produce images. Yet this account is far too thin.

Photography is an art when photographers mould form, sequence, mood, symbol, attention, and experience to stimulate the perception of a viewer.

Photography is a science when it enables measurement, observation, experiment, classification, recording, and forms of evidence. Astronomy, medicine, motion studies, remote sensing, and microscopy have all depended on photographic systems.

Photography belongs to the humanities when photographs become objects and tools of interpretation. A photograph can bear traces of empire, family life, race, class, gender, memory, conflict, labour, death, tourism, or belief. To study such images requires questions about authorship, context, power, history, and meaning.

I would therefore resist defining photography as either art, science, or humanity. Photography is a medium, a technology, a practice, a social act, and a way of knowing. It is a rare phenomenon that easily crosses the borders between these fields. A single photograph can be an instrument, an aesthetic object, a historical trace, a political act, and a private memory at the same time.

This is why photography creates such rich problems for education. To teach it only as art neglects evidence, optics, and technology. To teach it only as science neglects meaning and judgement. To teach it only through the humanities neglects making. Photography sits at the point where measurement, interpretation, and creation meet.
