However, until the 1970s few cameras had a light meter, so hand-held devices were commonplace.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My father&#8217;s was a Gossen Sixon selenium device made in &#8220;Germany (West)&#8221; which I suspect means that it was a fairly early one from the mid-1950s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They sell for less than \u00a310 on eBay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s one in the Science Museum: <a href=\"https:\/\/collection.sciencemuseumgroup.org.uk\/objects\/co8234672\/sixon-exposure-meter-and-case\">Sixon Exposure Meter and Case | Science Museum Group Collection<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The English instructions can be found here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cameramanuals.org\/flashes_meters\/gossen_sixon.pdf\">www.pdfcameramanuals.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gossen, the original manufacturer, still have the manual on their website: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gossen-photo.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/DL\/FOTO\/AG\/ba_sixtomat_d.pdf\">ba_sixtomat_d.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>These days most photographers barely think of using a light meter as everything is built-in to their camera.
