So, I shall be starting this year&#8217;s photography classes with significant events from 1825\/6, 1875\/6, 1925\/6, 1975\/6, and 2000\/1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1825<\/span><\/strong>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?num=10&amp;newwindow=1&amp;sca_esv=6181e4a68536525f&amp;hl=en&amp;cs=0&amp;sxsrf=AE3TifMGs1r-MhpxFs0AsoMAn0oiDv4-qw%3A1754556811824&amp;q=Joseph+Nic%C3%A9phore+Ni%C3%A9pce&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjj8dm7qfiOAxXNUUEAHXlrC10QxccNegQIDBAB&amp;mstk=AUtExfDnHof3_5D4oM9T43-avkTGcre7lfv1aU8Rilrgfa0k3HuJLzzaAF8Eb2lq0GkA3m5vY4EiEyhocqmGizSDxaAXCq3LOkkZVXIPmi7Oddw_Dn1JGmLGxcxZ5ubCaJEOOuRyXsDsgJQRxYJHAg5bvqNl2j5RAbyYtSkBzyhK51b3nlI&amp;csui=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Joseph Nic\u00e9phore Ni\u00e9pce<\/a>,&nbsp;a French inventor, created the first photomechanical reproduction, an image of a man leading a horse, using his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?num=10&amp;newwindow=1&amp;sca_esv=6181e4a68536525f&amp;hl=en&amp;cs=0&amp;sxsrf=AE3TifMGs1r-MhpxFs0AsoMAn0oiDv4-qw%3A1754556811824&amp;q=heliography+process&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjj8dm7qfiOAxXNUUEAHXlrC10QxccNegQIDBAC&amp;mstk=AUtExfDnHof3_5D4oM9T43-avkTGcre7lfv1aU8Rilrgfa0k3HuJLzzaAF8Eb2lq0GkA3m5vY4EiEyhocqmGizSDxaAXCq3LOkkZVXIPmi7Oddw_Dn1JGmLGxcxZ5ubCaJEOOuRyXsDsgJQRxYJHAg5bvqNl2j5RAbyYtSkBzyhK51b3nlI&amp;csui=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">heliography process<\/a>.&nbsp;This image was created by contact printing from an engraved plate, not with a camera.&nbsp;While not a camera photograph, it represents a significant step in the development of photography.&nbsp;Ni\u00e9pce&#8217;s earlier experiments with heliography, including a copy of an engraving of Pope Pius VII, were also important, though some were destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1826<\/span><\/strong> or 1827, Joseph Nic\u00e9phore Ni\u00e9pce created the first known permanent photograph using a camera.\u00a0This historic image, titled\u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?num=10&amp;newwindow=1&amp;cs=0&amp;sca_esv=6181e4a68536525f&amp;sxsrf=AE3TifPC69P-91T8DJzBEtXc8-9tJNgkdQ%3A1754556983656&amp;q=View+from+the+Window+at+Le+Gras&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwj_rdGNqviOAxVKYEEAHXZyFooQxccNegQIBBAB&amp;mstk=AUtExfBQ4q0etRu6DBAlEMUNu7Fso66vk4jfZNaxos5rZyn_iSXnfvHb_U5hB8BkPIiKn4880ZDcVwCXR48-cYaMtGfXsO155-nQQX6Uigk9-T_KzZphaEmkzkTlMDQ_r2vhZFGM9Iv7ZpNaudRa2J3EnTpsDkrwqrz0ERRqgtMhsBGyWNt71fvnp7EMuyk_EtyQhTIjysc7S-MqF2RylyIeEj-qSK-U42s11y38yU_eNnZ4QYp1mE3cQo5Qrnz_InzpYxVGqNO5W-iV195dj6H4w4G3&amp;csui=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">View from the Window at Le Gras<\/a>,&#8221; was made using the same process, which required an extremely long exposure time, possibly several days, and was captured on a pewter plate coated with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?num=10&amp;newwindow=1&amp;cs=0&amp;sca_esv=6181e4a68536525f&amp;sxsrf=AE3TifPC69P-91T8DJzBEtXc8-9tJNgkdQ%3A1754556983656&amp;q=bitumen&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwj_rdGNqviOAxVKYEEAHXZyFooQxccNegQIBBAC&amp;mstk=AUtExfBQ4q0etRu6DBAlEMUNu7Fso66vk4jfZNaxos5rZyn_iSXnfvHb_U5hB8BkPIiKn4880ZDcVwCXR48-cYaMtGfXsO155-nQQX6Uigk9-T_KzZphaEmkzkTlMDQ_r2vhZFGM9Iv7ZpNaudRa2J3EnTpsDkrwqrz0ERRqgtMhsBGyWNt71fvnp7EMuyk_EtyQhTIjysc7S-MqF2RylyIeEj-qSK-U42s11y38yU_eNnZ4QYp1mE3cQo5Qrnz_InzpYxVGqNO5W-iV195dj6H4w4G3&amp;csui=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bitumen<\/a>.\u00a0This ground-breaking achievement marked a significant milestone in the history of photography.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1875<\/span><\/strong>, quite a lot was happening on the photographic front.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Eadweard Muybridge<\/strong>, known for his pioneering work in motion studies, was working on a faster shutter mechanism around this time.&nbsp;He was also dealing with personal issues, including the death of his wife and a court case, which would later be the subject of an opera.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An image of a family at Stonehenge, possibly the earliest family photograph taken at the site, was captured in 1875. He is known for his series &#8220;People of the 20th Century,&#8221; which aimed to capture a cross-section of society during the Weimar Republic.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1925<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Leica I, designed by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?num=10&amp;newwindow=1&amp;sca_esv=6181e4a68536525f&amp;cs=0&amp;sxsrf=AE3TifPzS8wLTxi5hBbjq-wNW6Zt4C3P7A%3A1754557728926&amp;q=Oskar+Barnack&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiqiPrwrPiOAxUYX0EAHQ1OBUIQxccNegQIEBAB&amp;mstk=AUtExfCMHQ1i6wU_Po4GCHgWBdPJEW15yty2zHt6eCmhkqgGxp3tFUJM2KFMih3AHyc1hovIKHYr1mKsW8FFtPer-LFFSlU39GA0WLpIPcBz2rLvxfSLUHM1P9xoESXQMepQgDEv9oiHNfm1x_a1_rDThwcYn-gYDlMbAnGOMOZZSMFS7V0ceJb7CAP1zyKKJxiIa371yfcPoMDZ3975_g6AcSfZ9k5OqlnstRz0XSrM9lpZHao-yMjW7WROfPHOt7ndlen74u8NJg_FEqqQDzR2cNI2&amp;csui=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oskar Barnack<\/a>,&nbsp;was the first commercially available camera to use 35mm film.&nbsp;This smaller format allowed for more compact and portable cameras compared to the bulky box cameras of the past.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Impact on Photography:<\/strong> The Leica&#8217;s introduction revolutionised photography by making it more accessible and flexible.&nbsp;Photographers could now capture candid moments, experiment with different angles and perspectives, and easily document their lives.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Street Photography:<\/strong> The Leica&#8217;s portability and ease of use made it ideal for street photography, allowing photographers to capture spontaneous moments and everyday life in a way that was previously difficult to achieve.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1926<\/span><\/strong>, Dr. William Longley and Charles Martin created the world&#8217;s first underwater colour photograph, a milestone in photographic history.&nbsp;This pioneering image of a hogfish, taken using specialised waterproof camera housings and magnesium flash powder, marked a significant advancement in underwater photography.&nbsp;It demonstrated the potential for colour photography in previously inaccessible environments and paved the way for future developments in the field.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1975<\/span><\/strong>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?num=10&amp;newwindow=1&amp;sca_esv=6181e4a68536525f&amp;cs=0&amp;sxsrf=AE3TifPQjddCWrAlL4DK73wJN68EwNLxjQ%3A1754559871068&amp;q=Steven+Sasson&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwj0ybnutPiOAxXidUEAHZAKG3UQxccNegQIBRAB&amp;mstk=AUtExfDUevQv0uZYAuMEpAKp3RaP1LQEg1L1wFZEv06-TDav4uIySPwoMv6lYkUA5i4Lr2B9Bf9yZFh42RK2QvwEXQYQaWztKUs562P_5xFPyhIbs7_p5HDc0hTZOpw7hD_3JFw6twSxYO6vmYiQFwtTwhIgHaTNnVBbxO_SJyJD9S7RPlq-iz5ODzn5x3FuhfC4I2EquoRimnCF4T0yj_6XYty2ihIigNGNKDM4sBBvwHeK3_wE6ygqLwgPxb8VLFIzW0T59iWOoFry4uiI1XtxTbvk&amp;csui=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Steven Sasson<\/a>,&nbsp;an engineer at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?num=10&amp;newwindow=1&amp;sca_esv=6181e4a68536525f&amp;cs=0&amp;sxsrf=AE3TifPQjddCWrAlL4DK73wJN68EwNLxjQ%3A1754559871068&amp;q=Eastman+Kodak&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwj0ybnutPiOAxXidUEAHZAKG3UQxccNegQIBRAC&amp;mstk=AUtExfDUevQv0uZYAuMEpAKp3RaP1LQEg1L1wFZEv06-TDav4uIySPwoMv6lYkUA5i4Lr2B9Bf9yZFh42RK2QvwEXQYQaWztKUs562P_5xFPyhIbs7_p5HDc0hTZOpw7hD_3JFw6twSxYO6vmYiQFwtTwhIgHaTNnVBbxO_SJyJD9S7RPlq-iz5ODzn5x3FuhfC4I2EquoRimnCF4T0yj_6XYty2ihIigNGNKDM4sBBvwHeK3_wE6ygqLwgPxb8VLFIzW0T59iWOoFry4uiI1XtxTbvk&amp;csui=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eastman Kodak<\/a>,&nbsp;invented the first self-contained digital camera.&nbsp;While the concept of digital photography had been around since the 1960s, this invention is considered a key moment because it was the first time a working prototype was created as a single, self-contained unit.&nbsp;This camera, while basic with a low resolution of 0.01 megapixels and a 23-second exposure time, marked the beginning of the digital revolution in photography.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While not a stills development, <strong>Steadicam<\/strong>&nbsp;is a brand of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Camera_stabilizer\">camera stabilizer<\/a>&nbsp;mount for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Movie_camera\">motion picture cameras<\/a>&nbsp;invented by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Garrett_Brown\">Garrett Brown<\/a>&nbsp;and introduced in 1975 by&nbsp;Cinema Products Corporation. It was designed to isolate the&nbsp;camera&nbsp;from the&nbsp;camera operator&#8217;s&nbsp;movement, keeping the camera motion separate and controllable by a skilled operator. Technically, the Steadicam was first used in the&nbsp;Best Picture\u2013nominated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Woody_Guthrie\">Woody Guthrie<\/a>&nbsp;biopic&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bound_for_Glory_(1976_film)\">Bound for Glory<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;(<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1976<\/span><\/strong>), however, two other films used it immediately after and were released beforehand &#8211; <em>Rocky<\/em> and <em>Marathon Man<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2000<\/span><\/strong>, the J-SH04 was released by Sharp and their partner, J-Phone, in Japan.  It was the first commercially available camera phone, and allowed users to capture and send photos electronically, unlike other phones at the time that required a connection to a computer to retrieve the images.&nbsp;This marked a turning point in accessibility and the beginning of a new era for photography, which became more readily available to the general public than it had done since the launch of the Instamatic .&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Digital Cameras Overtake Film:<\/strong> <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2001<\/span><\/strong> was a turning point in photography as digital cameras gained widespread popularity and surpassed film cameras in sales.&nbsp;This event signalled the beginning of the digital photography era and its dominance of the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>September 11th&nbsp;Attacks: <\/strong>The terrorist attacks on 9\/11\/2001, resulted in a massive visual record, making it the most photographed disaster in history.&nbsp;Images were captured on both digital and film cameras, including those from disposable cameras and security cameras, showcasing the incredibly diverse ways cameras have permeated society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I often begin a class, whatever the subject, with an introduction that looks at the history of the discipline in relation to the significant anniversaries for that year.
